helenclover@gmail.com An opportunity of a life time, a dream waiting to be fulfilled, the desire to own a beautiful yacht, big enough for our family of grown children to visit and comfortable enough for 3 of us to live on for a year. All of course tightly constrained by a limited financial budget, a will to live and the obligation to teach our 13 year old something other than the art of survival. When we first found Puffin lying in Heyres France she was all we had dreamt about. A little scruffy around the edges, but brimming with charm and fine features. We talked of nothing else than how we would restore the woodwork, polish the chrome and make this beautiful well loved boat our home. And so it was that in November 2005 with winter just beginning we packed up our few belongings and moved onto Puffin. Just after Christmas having made a great start with the refurbishment we pushed off down the French coast to begin our adventure. Visiting the haunts of the rich and famous, St Tropez, Antibes, Cannes, Nice, Monaco, (surprisingly not deserted during the winter) learning fast the rigours of sailing in stormy, cold weather and handling such a robust yacht. The winter turned into spring which took us down the Italian coast, weaving between the many islands of Italy, old monasteries, prisons and active volcanoes. Visiting in turn major cities, holiday destinations and forgotten fishing towns spotting fish and dolphin as we had never had the opportunity to do before. Early May saw us through the Messina straights and exploring a little the delights and extravagances of Sicily. Entering the land of swordfish and Tuna the sea along the Southern aspect of Italy swirled with fish, jumping out to display their characteristic profiles. to be continued copyright 2008 |
